Protect Students' Rights
The United States Department of Education is attempting to enact a rule against career colleges and universities that will link a student's loan repayments to their starting salaries. If that debt to income ratio exceeds an arbitrary threshold, the department will assume the student wasn't prepared for "gainful employment" and the career college or university will be in jeopardy of losing that particular program. This rule would not affect state universities, community colleges or private, not-for-profit institutions.
Career colleges have high placement rates, and are largely successful in graduating veterans, first-generation students, single-parent households and other working Americans. Choice and access should be the foundation of federal higher education policy, not a rule which solves no identified problem by eliminating programs in high-demand areas like nursing, education, business, biotechnology and other health-care related fields.
