Invective has replaced fact as the currency of modern politics. As a result, public policy is influenced more by headlines than by data. This trend is best exemplified by the debate currently going on in Washington over the way the Federal government should treat career colleges and universities. Our nation is facing significant economic challenges which mandate strong leadership and change to existing business practices in government. However, these changes must contribute to positive outcomes which will contribute to the needs of all American’s who depend on government policies, regulations, and entitlements for a better life.

CREW Criticizes HELP Senate Hearing Witness Selection Process
We applaud the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) for their letter to Chairman Tom Harkin of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions criticizing his invitation to Wall Street short seller Steven Eisman to testify at what was supposed to be a fair and balanced hearing on the for-profit education sector.  Excerpt from letter dated July 1, 2010:

America’s FOCUS commends the Students for Academic Choice
We would like to congratulate the newly elected officers of Students for Academic Choice, ALL of which are students from one of America’s FAMILY OWNED COLLEGES UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS!! Career college students around the country elected Dawn Connor for President from Globe University-Eau Claire, Rob Robertson for Vice president from Keiser University and Amy Newman, elected Secretary from Bryan College.

America’s FOCUS remembers our nation’s heroes
America’s FOCUS would like to take a moment to remember our nation’s heroes. In the past, Memorial Day was normally meant to remember those who served in WWII, the Korean War, or the Vietnam Conflict giving the ultimate sacrifice for American freedom. However, with the onset of 9/11, we remember those much closer to us; students, sons, daughters, family, friends, neighbors.
We salute those who are currently serving our great country and those who have served. Thank you.”

A huge thanks to Congressman Payne and Congressman Hastings
America’s FOCUS enthusiastically commends Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ) and Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL) for their leadership in Congress and commitment to America’s career college students. Â On March 22, 2010 they, along with sixteen other highly regarded members of Congress, submitted a letter to Secretary Duncan on behalf of our students and alumni strongly opposing the proposed Gainful Employment rule which unfairly targets non-traditional students. Â The following excerpt was taken from the letter jointly signed by these esteemed members of Congress:
“In its current form, the Department’s suggested approach singles out students attending proprietary institutions of higher education and non-degree programs at non-profit institutions of higher education, …
