We applaud the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) for their letter to Chairman Tom Harkin of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions criticizing his invitation to Wall Street short seller Steven Eisman to testify at what was supposed to be a fair and balanced hearing on the for-profit education sector.  Excerpt from letter dated July 1, 2010:
-
“….To our knowledge, Mr. Eisman has no expertise in education policy; he holds no degrees, has no experience, and no background on the education policies at issue. His financial conflicts of interest could not be more blatant, yet they were not disclosed in advanced of his testimony…..Accordingly, CREW recommends that the Committee consider changes to its rules in order to identify in advance all conflicts of interest potential witnesses may have. In addition, safeguards must be put in place to ensure that never again is a witness permitted to use his or her hearing testimony for private gain.â€

The millions of students and graduates of career colleges and hundreds of thousands of Americans employed in this sector thank you for being on watch!
